WCAS Seminar - Prof. Steve Haswell, University of Hull

Prof. Steve Haswell  Professor Steve Haswell from the University of Hull will be visiting the Centre and giving a talk entitled: Development of lab on a chip devices for biomedical and forensic applications.

The talk will be held in the MOAC Seminar Room, Coventry House at 4.00 pm on Tuesday 16th November.

Abstract: Following a brief introduction into the basic operational characteristic of micro fluidic based devices specific examples will be drawn from two areas of ongoing research to illustrate both the functionality and integration of processes and systems.  The first is focused on the development of a tissue/cell based micro fluidic device that can be used in conjunction with drug screening and biomolecular detection to offer a route to personalised medical diagnostics and prognosis.  Examples will be given of the methodology developed to maintain and probe cancer and heart tissue samples in a micro fluidic environment and how this can be linked to a range of detection systems.  In addition on chip tissue disaggregation to liberate cells for antibody/antigen interactions and subsequent DNA sequencing will be outlined in the presentation.  The second example will describe the development of a portable integrated DNA profiling system that will describe both chip and control system integration and discuss the scientific and technical constrains of such an approach.  Much of the work presented will be at an early stage of development but will include the design and build approaches required for both device (integrated micro fluidic system) and control technology.
