Biography

Paul completed a degree in Mathematics at the University of Plymouth, followed by a EPSRC-funded PhD in Statistics in the field of Extreme Value Theory and Bayesian non-parametric quantile regression with splines. Between October 2008 and July 2009, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher for the Fetal Medicine Foundation, creating novel pre-natal screening algorithms for Down's Syndrome and Pre-eclampsia. He then moved to Peninsula school of Medicine and Dentistry (Plymouth and Exeter Universities) as Senior Research Fellow in Applied Statistics at the Centre for Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Biomarkers, supported by a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Grant entitled "Clinical Trials Methods in Neurodegenerative Diseases". In January 2014, Paul moved to Oxford University's Department of Experimental Psychology, working with several groups as a statistician including Professors Maggie Snowling and Dorothy Bishop. I worked on a diverse range of projects including RCTs, genetics, behavioural, neuroimaging, statistical learning, and Delphi studies. Paul joined the Centre for Research in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (CIDD) at Warwick University, initially as research fellow, then Assistant Professor in Applied Statistics and has worked on randomised controlled trials, observational studies, and research methods project. He has additional interests in open science and reproducible research practices. Paul is the co-director of PhD programme and statistical lead in CIDD, University of Warwick. Between 2021-2024, Paul was a member of the faculty ethics board. He has supervised two PhD students to completion and has supervised a further 11 students on their statistical aspects of their PhD (Universities: 1 x Cardiff, 1 x Birmingham, 1 x Kent, 1 x Essex, 7 x Warwick). Paul is a chartered statistician and Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and current consulting editor for statistics for the Journal of Intellectual Disability Research.
