Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences

Congratulations to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson who have been awarded the 2024 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

One of Warwick Economics most notable alumni, James Robinson is a CAGE Research Associate and a prominent political scientist and economist who has conducted influential research in the field of political and economic development and the factors that are the root causes of conflict.

Most recently his work on the importance of societal institutions for a country’s prosperity with Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson featured in CAGE’s video series for schools in partnership with Discover Economics which draws on economic history to understand the effects of colonialism and imperial interventions on the economies of Africa and India.

James Robinson has long been closely connected with CAGE and the University of Warwick. In 2019 he gave the inaugural Crafts lecture “Evidence from 10 years of Research” which explored why liberty flourishes in some states but fails in others. Simon Johnson also delivered the inaugural CAGE policy lecture in economics where he discussed the relationship between public investment, science, and economic growth since 1940.

Bishnuprya Gupta, CAGE Research Director said:

“The laureates’ contribution towards understanding the impact of colonialism on a country’s development is hugely important for understanding inequalities in economic development across countries.”
