360 Lecture with Dr Dean Garratt

The Department of Economics is pleased to announce that Dr Dean Garratt from Aston Business School will be delivering the second talk as part of the 360 Guest Lecture Series 2019/20 for this academic year.

How to Communicate Economics to Non-Economists

Monday 3 February 2020, 12-1pm
IMC 002, WMG, University of Warwick

This event is for staff and students only and registration is required in order to attend.

About the talk

As a student of Economics, do you ever wonder about what knowledge and skills employers value most in economics graduates? In the 2019 Employers Survey conducted by The Economics Network the ability to communicate complex economic ideas to non-economists as well as the ability to apply knowledge in a wider context have been consistently rated by employers as two of the most important skills for economics graduates to have. The roles being hired for by respondents seeking greater communication skills include policy economists, journalists and consultants, where such skills are clearly valuable.

About the speaker - Dr Dean Garratt

We have invited Dr Dean Garratt, an expert in the field of communicating economics, to outline some of his ideas on how students (and staff) can become better at communicating economic ideas to wider audiences. Dean (currently at Aston Business School) teaches economics at a variety of levels, including modules in macroeconomics and economics for non-specialists. He is passionate about encouraging students to communicate economics more intuitively, to deepen their interest in economics and to apply economics to a range of issues.

Dean is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an Associate of the Economics Network which aims to promote high-quality teaching practice. He has been involved in several projects promoting a problem-based learning (PBL) approach in the teaching of economics.

In 2006, Dean was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Prize by the Economics Network. The award recognises exemplary teaching practice that deepens and inspires interest in economics. Dean is a co-author of 3 leading and influential undergraduate economics texts: Economics, Essentials of Economics and Economics for Business. You can find out more about Dean on his Aston Business School profile.

Please note that photography and video recording will be taking place during the event.
