International Women's Day Fundraising EventWLS/Library/RootesRuns from Wednesday, March 08 to Friday, March 10. The theme for the 2023 International Women's Day, ‘DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’, highlights the need to bridge the gender gap and access opportunities in digital education for women and girls. Over 10 million girls are out of school in Nigeria, with no access to digital and technological education. To commemorate the day, we are raising funds to train 50 girls in Nigeria in digital and technological courses, thus increasing their employability skills. Our target is to raise funds for 50 girls which will cost around £4100 for the bootcamp training in digital courses. We will be having an offline fundraise in 3 different locations for 3 days consecutively: 8 March - The Warwick Law School, 9 March - Outside the Library, 10 March - Outside the Rootes Grocery Store. |

PG Work in Progress SeminarS2.77/MS TeamsThis week's PG WiP Seminar will be led by Giulia Lorenzini (PhD)
Title: "On the Distinctiveness of Listening to Music" Thursday March 9th 2023 5pm in S2.77 and on TeamsLink opens in a new window. Everyone welcome! Abstract: In philosophy of auditory perception, taxonomic works, such as O’Callaghan (2021) and O’Callaghan & Nudds (2009), consider the perception of music as a distinctive case. Yet, the current literature on the matter does not furnish a standardised and generally accepted reason for which this should be the case. In this talk, I consider two possible ways to go to reply to the question regarding the distinctiveness of perceiving music. I start presenting what I call here “the Naturalistic View”, based on Budd (2008) and DiBona’s (2022) works. I then show how this view provides some insights on necessary, yet, not sufficient mechanisms, at play in the experience of perceiving music. I proceed considering Scruton’s account of the experience of music, to which I refer here as “the Metaphorical View”. After presenting some wide-spread criticisms to this view, I discuss the case of enculturated and unenculturated listeners to highlight a core, interesting element present in Scruton’s proposal which I consider worth saving. |

Guest Lecture: 'Racial Capitalism and the Anthropocene'S0.20The University of Warwick Community are invited to the following Law School Lecture: 'Racial Capitalism and the Anthropocene' with Professor Carmen G. Gonzalez, Loyola University Chicago. Racial capitalism is a useful framework for understanding the intersecting socio-ecological crises of the Anthropocene, including unprecedented environmental degradation, extreme economic inequality, and the resurgence of authoritarian ethno-nationalism. This lecture examines the logic of racial capitalism in order to distinguish between reforms that entrench the system and those that facilitate its transformation. Register to attend. |
