CAGE Summer School 2021 - Economic growth and development

Programme

The theme of the summer school is understanding long-run patterns of growth and development in different parts of the world, and the enduring effects of history on economic development.

The lecturers will provide insights drawing on a broad spectrum of methods used in economic history, ranging from historical national accounting to the use of geographic information systems and text analysis tools. The lectures will provide a global coverage of countries and regions, and a wide range of research questions in growth and development. The summer school will host the Crafts lecture of 2021 to be given by Professor Joachim Voth, University of Zurich.

The summer school is intended mainly for PhD students and early postdoctoral researchers in economic history. The morning sessions will consist of lectures by Prof. Stephen Broadberry (University of Oxford), Prof. Herman de Jong (University of Groningen), Dr Kerstin Enflo (Lund University), Prof. James Fenske (University of Warwick), Prof. Bishnupriya Gupta (University of Warwick), Dr Ruixue Jia (University of California at San Diego/ London School of Economics), Prof. Kevin O’Rourke (NYU Abu Dhabi), and Prof. Noam Yuchtman (London School of Economics). While UK based lecturers will be present, the lectures by overseas academics are likely to be online, depending on travel restrictions.

The afternoon sessions will consist of presentations by students and postdocs, with feedback from the lecturers and other participants. Presentations can be on any aspect of economic history.

Practicalities

If travel restrictions permit, this will be a hybrid event: participants coming from the UK will be able to take part in person and overseas participants will take part online (UK participants who wish to take part online may do so). If international travel restrictions are eased, we may consider having overseas participants in person. This will depend on government and university recommendations. If COVID restrictions are tightened, the event will be moved to online only.

Accommodation and meals will be provided free of charge and we will reimburse economy only travel expenses up to £50 from the UK.
