The Bar Council returns with our first in-person Pupillage Fair exhibition since 2019. Taking place at etc. venues, 133 Houndsditch, Liverpool Street, London, on Saturday 15 October 2022, you will be able to visit over 80 exhibitors and meet with representatives from a wide range of pupillage providers and experts from across the Bar. This year the Pupillage Fair will also include a series of online fringe events in the week leading up to the exhibition on Saturday 15 October 2022, through which you will be able to hear what life is like as a barrister working in different areas of practice and find out about joining the Bar as a career changer or an applicant with a disability.

Workshop - Professionals at the sharp end of criminal justice: The price of McDonaldization
Hybrid

A workshop supported by the Institute of Advanced Study Fernandes Fellowship. With Jackie Hodgson, School of Law, University of Warwick UK and Mojca Plesnicar, Institute of Criminology, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The workshop will revolve around two key questions:

  • How has the metamorphosis of criminal justice affected the idea of professionalism in criminal justice? What has happened with professionals’ discretion and their autonomy? How has the role of judge, prosecutor and defence lawyer changed?
  • How have the changes affected professionals and their well-being? Is there greater emotional labour involved in this new reality of emphasised productivity and changing expectations, changes in working routines and habits, the increased public and media attention and scrutiny? How do professionals cope?
