Discover Economics Virtual Series
Online

Runs from Tuesday, March 23 to Thursday, March 25.

The Discover Economics Virtual Series aims to open the eyes of Year 9 and 10 students from local schools to the exciting subject of economics, to help them gain a better understanding of what economics is at a crucial stage of their education, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding their future studies.

Date: Tuesday 23 March - Thursday 25 March 2021
Time: 17:00 - 18:00 (for students) and 18:00 - 19:00 (for parents)
Location: Online via Microsoft Teams

Please note: that we've changed the original timings of the sessions for students to allow more students to participate outside of school hours. Joining instructions will be sent via email on Monday 22 March to registrants.

At Warwick, we believe that access to a world-leading university should be open to people from all backgrounds. We hope to raise student's aspirations and increase their awareness of the benefits of Higher Education.

It is well known that economics, as a subject, suffers from a lack of female role models. This has been indicated as one of the reasons why female students in economics are under-represented. It is our objective to emphasise the role of women in economics with the objective to widen female participation within the subject.

Please note that this programme should be useful for any students who are curious about economics and want to find out more about what it involves and what careers it may lead to.

We would also like to extend our invitation to parents who would like to find out more about what studying economics involves and how we guide and support our students so that they can prepare for exciting careers in economics. The session for parents is on 25 March at 6-7pm and details can be found in the programme below.

Why should I attend?

The virtual series, delivered by staff from the Department of Economics at Warwick provides the opportunity:

  • for students to meet academics and professional economists from outside of academia, who will talk about what's like to be an economist and gain a taste of what it might be like to study economics at university.
  • for students to participate in an exciting competition, focusing on the topic of climate change;
  • or parents to join a session to learn how to engage young learners with the subject of economics.

Did you know...

  • You don't need to have studied economics before to study it at degree level? Whilst economics is a fine A Level to be taking, no degree programme in the UK requires economics A level.
  • You also don't need to have studied maths at A Level before to study it economics degree level? Economics has a reputation for being very mathematical, however many programmes which contain the study of economics do not require maths at A Level.
  • We provide contextual offers for our degree course programmes? This means if a student meets two or more of our contextual data indicators they may be eligible for a 2 grade reduction to the standard offer. For programmes within the Department of Economics at Warwick, this would reduce the typical offer from A*AA to AAB.

Supporting Discover Economics

The Department of Economics at the University of Warwick are supporting Discover Economics - a national campaign led by the Royal Economics Society which aims to broaden the appeal of economics to potential students, change their perceptions of economics and attract more students from under-represented groups to the discipline.
