About Us

A School with global reach and local presence

The School of Education, Learning and Communication Sciences launched in August 2023 and comprises Applied Linguistics (AL); Centre for Research into Intellectual and Development Disabilities (CIDD); Centre for Lifelong Learning (CLL); Centre for Teacher Education (CTE); and Education Studies (ES). SELCS has over 1000 students and 200 members of staff.

Our scholarly community is engaged with all aspects of education from its academic roots in sociology and philosophy to its practical application in classrooms in the UK and internationally. We also have a strong focus on the role of communication in and beyond the educational space (for example in intercultural workplaces), and on lifelong learning (ensuring that students at different career and life stages can access our programmes).

With students, we develop creative research projects for local communities and international partners. We work closely with teachers, policy makers, businesses, schools, local, national and international governments as well as elite sports men and women and first responders.
