Innovate UK have funded a knowledge transfer partnership on "Integrating Demand Management and Routing Operations" from June 2018 - December 2020. The project will deliver the development, testing and deployment of an innovative decision support system to assist Slicker Recycling in their nation-wide collections of waste oil. Prof Juergen Branke is the lead academic, Dr Vladimir Deineko and Dr Arne Strauss are the academic supervisors. The project has overall funding of £211k.

Dr Arne Strauss (University of Warwick) and Dr Christine Currie (University of Southampton) organise a one-day workshop in The Shard in central London to identify future research directions in the intersection of demand management (dynamic pricing, choice modelling, personalisation etc), privacy preservation and related issues against the background of a changing environment (as reflected e.g. by the sharing economy, smart grids, private data aggregators, General Data Protection Regulation, e-Privacy Regulation etc).

The workshop will include presentations from experts and users in the area (confirmed speakers include Prof Graham Cormode, Warwick Computer Science and Alan Turing Institute; Prof Mandy Chessell, IBM Distinguished Engineer and IBM Master Inventor; Prof Irene Ng, Director, International Institute of Product and Service Innovation); an introduction to the framework from Dr Stalla-Bourdillon (Law, University of Southampton) and facilitated discussions to develop research questions.

A funding bid to the European Commission's Horizon 2020 was successful: starting from March 2016, a team led by Dr Arne Strauss in the ORMS Group at WBS will work together with two other teams based in Germany and Serbia, respectively, to develop coordinated capacity ordering and trajectory pricing for Air Traffic Management.

The team at Warwick will focus on the development of the underpinning mathematical models, control policies and their evaluation. A Research Fellow position at postdoctoral level will support the team over a period of two years; please find the job advert here.

WBS Professor Duncan Shaw has secured funding from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) for the research project “Considering the involvement of convergent volunteers during major floods”. The project started in October 2013 and will continue until the end of October 2014.

Duncan explained, “This project will identify and explore the dimensions that emergency planners should consider when deciding whether or not to embed convergent volunteers into their official response. At present there is no official guidance on the involvement of convergent volunteers during emergencies. This research will therefore engage with the relevant key stakeholders from the public and voluntary sectors to identify and validate potential dimensions that may inform national policy on volunteer involvement in the response to major flood events.”

The first stage of the research will scope the operational challenges associated with the involvement of volunteers in emergency response. The second stage will identify the potential dimensions that planners may need to consider when involving volunteers through a review of the policy context and academic/practitioner literature bases as well as a series of interviews with key stakeholder involved in the management and coordination of both organised and convergent volunteers.

The first of two Masterclasses was held at Maple House, Birmingham on 5^th – 6^th November 2012. The Masterclass brought together emergency management officials to share their lessons and experiences of using social media to protect the public and build their resilience.

31 representatives from emergency management and government organisations across the EU participated in the two-day event.
