Fulbright Commission

The US-UK Fulbright Commission established in 1948 hosts the Fulbright scholarship programme which focuses on opportunities and exchanges between the USA and the UK, as part of a global programme. It provides funding opportunities for students, researchers and professionals whose experience whilst on scholarship has lifelong impact on their career and outlook. Competition for UK awards is tough, and winners are well rounded individuals who combine academic excellence with community spirit, leadership potential and intercultural awareness.

How does this relationship work?

Warwick has an established relationship with the Fulbright Commission and recently has welcomed several scholars onto postgraduate courses. Warwick is also proud that some of our academics have been funded by Fulbright to undertake research in the USA.

From Student to Scholar

While a journalism major at Temple, Hal Conte participated in a study abroad programme in London and was determined to return to the UK for further studies if he could secure the funding. Despite securing a job at USA Today just two days earlier, he made an appointment with a Fulbright adviser. He determined that the MA Global Media and Communications at Warwick was the best fit for his academic interests and after a rigorous selection process was delighted to be selected as a Fulbright Scholar.

US Bound

Carmen Villa-Llera, a PhD student in the Department of Economics, will be spending six months as a visiting student at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago funded by a Fulbright award. Her research uses economic modelling and data to understand more about why people choose to live in cities, how that determines wages and explores the impacts of gentrification and crime as well as how housing policies can affect spatial inequalities.

The Fulbright Legacy

Professor Sandra Chapman, a space weather researcher in the Department of Physics, is a member of the 54,000 strong US-UK Fulbright alumni community having been awarded the Fulbright Lloyds of London Scholar Award in 2017. Chapman’s research in the Department of Astronomy at Boston University focused on how space weather impacts our planet and its outputs inform decisions taken by Lloyds of London as Space Weather is now included in the UK register. During her year in the US, Chapman also sent time collaborating with researchers at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, the Santa Fe Institute, New Mexico, an independent, non-profit theoretical research institute and the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington.
