Fulbright Commission

The US-UK Fulbright Commission established in 1948 hosts the Fulbright scholarship programme which focuses on opportunities and exchanges between the USA and the UK, as part of a global programme. It provides funding opportunities for students, researchers and professionals whose experience whilst on scholarship has lifelong impact on their career and outlook. Competition for UK awards is tough, and winners are well rounded individuals who combine academic excellence with community spirit, leadership potential and intercultural awareness.

How does this relationship work?

Warwick has an established relationship with the Fulbright Commission and recently has welcomed several scholars onto postgraduate courses. Warwick is also proud that some of our academics have been funded by Fulbright to undertake research in the USA.

From Student to Scholar

While a journalism major at Temple, Hal Conte participated in a study abroad programme in London and was determined to return to the UK for further studies. He identified the MA Global Media and Communications at Warwick as the best fit for his academic interests and was delighted to be selected as a Fulbright Scholar. Following the successful completion of his MA, Hal is now undertaking a PhD at the Centre for Cultural and Media Policy Studies.

'Completing my MA in the UK has definitely ensured my overall view of the world has been much less parochial than might otherwise be the case. Discussing media and cultural policy issues with students from far afield locales in terms of distance and values has taught me endlessly more about the diversity of the world and of perspectives, than US or UK media outlets or popular culture.' Fulbright Scholar

US Bound

Carmen Villa-Llera, a PhD student in the Department of Economics, spent six months as a visiting student at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago funded by a Fulbright award.

'My time as a Fulbright scholar was transformative and incredibly enriching. On the work front, I made a lot of progress through my interactions with leading experts in economics of crime and youth development. I had the opportunity to present at various departments within the University, and to obtain new perspectives on the differences and similarities with regards to youth crime in the US, and Europe. Beyond academics, this period was filled with personal growth and plenty of fun exploring Chicago. I immersed myself in the city's vibrant music scene, explored its rich art offerings, met inspiring friends, and got to see the Bulls!' Carmen

Claire Shao

The Fulbright Legacy

During her Fulbright year, Claire Shao is undertaking an MA in the History of Medicine.

'I chose Warwick for its stellar history department, particularly the excellent interdisciplinary scholars at the Centre for the History of Medicine. My Fulbright year has been such an exciting adventure! I have been fortunate to have a good balance of coursework/research time and enjoying living abroad for the first time. In between attending seminars and writing essays, I have been exploring England by train and going on weekend trips to other European cities. Ultimately, my goal is to go to medical school. I believe that exploring the history of medicine is critical to understanding the relationship between medical institutions and the populations they serve. My Fulbright experience at Warwick will help me be a better physician for my patients and will give me the foundations to do future work in the medical humanities.' Claire
