Prof Don Pollacco on viewing this week's Northern Lights from the UK
To predict exactly where you can see the northern lights is difficult as conditions can change quickly. The current ‘storm’ is said to be visible from northern England but they are notoriously difficult to predict. However, one thing is for sure, and that is that you are unlikely to see them from a brightly lit city environment – you need to go somewhere dark and look towards the northern horizon (look for the North Star). So, you would preferably be in the countryside away from street lights. Of course it also needs to clear!

Emeritus Professor Ian Tuersley on the missing Titanic submarine
Efforts at this stage are focused on trying to locate the vessel by listening for noises generated by the trapped crew, detected using sonar buoys – with a number of these having been deployed by rescue aircraft. If the noises can be picked up by more buoys it will help to narrow the search area considerably but the operation has been realistically compared to looking for a needle in a haystack.
Dr Abimbola Ayorinde on maternity care for black women following Tori Bowie death
The tragic death of Tori Bowie is another call for more to be done to tackle the high rate of maternal morbidity and mortality among Black women. As highlighted by Allyson Felix, three out of four American team-mates at the Rio 2016 Olympics either died or nearly died due to pregnancy. There are other high-profile Black women with similar stories. These are examples of how the risk goes beyond socioeconomic class. The racial inequities in maternal health is a global issue.
