Warwick Medical School professor appointed to House of Lords
Professor Swaran Singh, Professor of Social and Community Psychiatry at the University of Warwick, has been appointed as a life peer and will join the House of Lords as a Conservative peer.
The appointment recognises Professor Singh's longstanding contributions to mental health research, clinical psychiatry and public service, including work on equality and human rights.
Professor Singh joined the University of Warwick in 2006. His research has made significant contributions to social and community psychiatry, particularly in early intervention for psychosis, the mental health of ethnic minority communities and young people's transition between child and adult mental health services. Alongside his academic role, he practises as a Consultant Psychiatrist with Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust.
Beyond academia and clinical practice, Professor Singh served as a Commissioner of the Equality and Human Rights Commission between 2013 and 2019, led the independent investigation into allegations of discrimination within the Conservative Party in 2021, and has advised national and international organisations on healthcare equity and mental health policy.
Professor Singh remarked on his appointment:
"I am deeply honoured to have been conferred a peerage. To me, it reflects the enduring strength of British democracy that someone who came to this country without political connections or privilege could be entrusted with such a distinction.
“This is the proudest achievement of my life. It marks the culmination of a journey I could scarcely have imagined when I first arrived in Britain, and I am profoundly grateful for the confidence that has been placed in me.
“I accept this appointment with humility, a deep sense of responsibility, and an awareness of the trust it represents. I look forward to serving to the very best of my ability and contributing to public life, drawing on my experience and expertise wherever they may be of value.”
Professor Stuart Croft, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Warwick, said:
"We are immensely proud of Professor Singh's appointment to the House of Lords. Swaran has dedicated his career to improving the lives of people through pioneering research, clinical practice and public service. His experience and expertise will make an important contribution to parliamentary debate on mental health, healthcare equity and wider public policy. On behalf of the entire Warwick community, I congratulate him on this well-deserved appointment."
Professor Gavin Perkins, Dean of Medicine at Warwick Medical School, added:
“Professor Singh represents the very best of Warwick Medical School: a clinician, researcher and public servant whose work has delivered meaningful change far beyond the boundaries of academia. He has consistently combined academic excellence with a deep commitment to addressing some of society's most pressing challenges in mental health and health inequalities. His appointment to the House of Lords is a fitting recognition of a lifetime of achievement, and we look forward to seeing the insight, compassion and evidence-based perspective he will bring to public life. We are enormously proud to count him among our colleagues."
