128,000 children will wake up homeless this Christmas day - economic comment
According to housing and homelessness charity Shelter 128,000 children will spend Christmas day homeless and in temporary accommodation. Professor Abhinay Muthoo comments on the economic background to this situation.
“This situation is very sad but not surprising given the immediate issue of the housing crisis we are facing – as acknowledged in Chancellor’s Budget of last month. The severe shortage of social housing of course is driving the immediate desperate situation. The bigger picture has to do with the tough economic conditions facing the poorest families and those on low incomes.”
