Tom Hemingway discusses Oscar nominations
The big story from this morning’s Oscar nominations is the dual snub of Barbie’s Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig for Best Actress and Best Director respectively. This is a highly competitive awards year, with 3 films earning double-digit nominations (Killers of the Flower Moon [10], Poor Things [11], and Oppenheimer [13]) and it could be argued that a genre-bias against comedy work has prevented both Robbie and Gerwig from achieving recognition in these categories.
It is also worth noting the international influence of the directors branch, leading to two nominations for non-US filmmakers - Justine Tried (Anatomy of a Fall) and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest). Other notable surprises are a sole nomination for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (John Williams) in Best Score and Annette Bening getting her 5th Oscar nomination for her work in Netflix’s Nyad.
