Dr Julie Labalzo-Wright comments on the upcoming Golden Globe Awards

Once the known as the awards show where film and television stars partied in a hotel banquet room, the Golden Globes had fallen on hard times in the last few years.

Criticised for its lack of diversity in the voting membership of the Hollywood Foreign Press, the 2022 ceremony was boycotted by many stars and not televised, while the 2023 ceremony returned to normalcy, but less media attention than in past years when the ceremony was viewed as a perennial pre-cursor to the Oscars.

The Golden Globes may benefit from the Hollywood strikes earlier this year that postponed film premieres and the Emmy awards becoming one of the first events in months to feature many A-list stars. As one of the only award ceremonies to feature film and television and separate film into Drama or Musical/Comedy categories, it is expected that two of the best reviewed and biggest box office hits this year, Barbie and Oppenheimer will walk away as winners.
