Professor Pietari Kaapa, Professor in Media and Communications at the Centre for Cultural and Media Policy Studies discusses Hollywood strikes

The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are a historic mobilisation of forces against the undervaluing and undercutting of creativity and labour in the film, TV and streaming industry.

The strikes confront an exploitative system intent on destabilising sustainable working conditions and fair pay/compensation by substituting the work of creatives with generative AI and digital replication – in doing so, the unions are taking a stand to challenge the ways technological change and disruption often result in the exploitation of key creative workers, veiled in the rhetoric of inevitable technological progress and economic rationality.
