A year on from organ donation law change in England: Dr Greg Moorlock comments
As we pass a year since legislation was introduced in England for the 'opt-out' system for organ donation, and reports that 296 people have donated their organs this way, Dr Greg Moorlock from Warwick Medical School comments on the impact it has had.
Dr Moorlock said: "My view on the opt-out legislation is that it is a step in the right direction, but that unfortunately implementing during the Covid pandemic is likely to have reduced the impact of it. There are also ongoing ethical concerns about the extent to which people are truly aware of the change – so there remains a lot of work to do in terms of raising public awareness of deemed consent, particularly amongst hard-to-reach communities."
