Are there actually 5 types of diabetes? Professor Sudhesh Kumar comments.

Commenting on a new study that argues for recognising five different types of diabetes, Professor Sudhesh Kumar from Warwick Medical School said:

"We have known for a long time that all patients with diabetes do not have a life course that is similar nor do they respond in the same way to various treatments.

"What this study does is identify 5 clusters of patients who have similar features but clearly this is only the first step.

"They use tests not routinely done in clinical practice so more work is needed to refine this approach and produce simple tools that clinicians can use in day to day practice. We need to know if these observations are valid in other more diverse populations and we also need to know if treating these groups differently would produce better outcomes."
