Expert comment: National Audit Office criticises Home Office's treatment of Windrush generation
The National Audit Office has today published a report into the Home Office's handling of the Windrush situation. The report concludes that "The Home Office failed to fulfil its duty of care to members of the Windrush generation, which led to serious consequences for the people affected." Dr Hannah Jones, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, comments:-
"The findings of the National Audit Office report on the Windrush Scandal are unsurprising. Even before the Home Office’s disgraceful treatment of the Windrush Generation reached national headlines, our research found second- and third-generation ethnic minority Brits fearing they would be asked to leave.
"We found this was a result of successive governments’ creation of a hostile environment, whose effects reach way beyond what they term “illegal immigrants” and creates fear, distrust and disruption for people across the UK, regardless of their immigration status."
