Latest strikes in France 'are enough to ground Paris' to a halt - comment from Dr David Lees
France is facing significant disruption as strikes take place across the country over President Emmanuel Macron's pension proposals. Dr David Lees, from the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, comments:
"This wave of strikes presents the biggest challenge to the leadership of Macron since the Gilets Jaunes protests of winter 2018. Macron is faced with the unusual prospect of industrial unrest before any concrete proposals have been put forward around pension reform. While Macron faces very little political opposition in the French Parliament, his real opponents are now out on the street. Not all unions are taking part in these disputes but the scale of the strikes are enough to ground Paris, and many parts of the French nation, to a halt."
