Images of children as young as 11 rioting on the streets this summer contrasted sharply with pictures of A-level students celebrating their exam results. Professor Hilary Pilkington from the University of Warwick's Sociology department looks at the way young people are portrayed as 'good' and 'bad' and explores how they engage with society and their own communities.

Her latest research project MyPlace has secured almost eight million euro from the European Commission to look at youth political engagement.
