Report reveals decline in bus use in England - expert comment
Professor Mike Waterson from the Department of Economics and the Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy comments on today's report from the Independent Transport Commission exploring the changing shape of the bus market in England.
He said:-
“This interesting report documents a fairly bleak picture regarding trends in bus usage. Declining bus usage, and with it most likely greater car usage, move us in precisely the wrong direction as regards the environment.
"The focus now needs to be on potential solutions, including urban franchising, exploring what can be learnt from areas where usage has been increasing, and the appropriate role for subsidies - as suggested in my recent report for the SMF.”
