Shweta Singh on children being exposed to violent content online

Assistant Professor of Information Systems at WBS Shweta Singh said: “The common theme in these incidents is that social media platforms aren’t doing enough to protect kids from watching harmful content online. Harms such as cyberbullying, online violence and self harm reach children via algorithmic mechanisms, to promote viewership or propagate paid content.

“This is morally wrong, and more needs to be done on these platforms. Tech companies' own research suggests the intensity of harm this content has on children but they refuse to act, with children dying due to the negligence of these profit making companies. Government must force these companies to take responsibility for this and bring in new laws to enforce child safety online".
