"The army is certainly facing a crisis of under-investment" - Professor Anthony King

Providing his expert analyis on reports into the funding of the British Army, Anthony King, Professor of War Studies in the University of Warwick's Department of Politics and International Studies, today said:

“Concerns about defence spending have been expressed for some time. But General Carter’s speech represents an important moment when the CGS himself affirms serious worries about under-funding of the army. The army is certainly facing a crisis of under-investment in existing technologies such as precision artillery and new ones such as communications, electronic and cyber capabilities.

"In order to maximise its current budget and to justify an increase of spending the army may have to rationalise its structure however. This may involve a quite profound reform of its regimental system.”
