Will Twitter's ban on political advertising have any impact? Expert comment

Dr Redoano said:

"The ban of political ads on Twitter is not going to solve the challenges that the use of political micro-targeting on social media has generated.

"First, the volume of political ads on Twitter are of much smaller scale compared to those on Facebook and Google, so the Twitter banning will just shift political ads to alternative social media platforms.

"Second, political ads on social media have been proved to be highly effective in reaching out a growing share of potential voters, they are also cheaper to run and so more affordable to a wider range of political candidates. The main problem is the lack of more forward-looking regulation and coordination among regulatory bodies at international level and a clear policy of ad transparency and information for users."
