Award assists Warwick to strengthen Links with Business

The University has been awarded £8 million as part of the Government's Knowledge Exploitation Funding programme, comprising the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF), Science Enterprise Challenge, University Challenge and the Public Sector Research Fund. The main Fund " HEIF " is aimed at supporting the continuing development of the capacity in universities to interact with business and the community.

The University has successfully bid for a total of £530,845 over three years from the HEIF to expand and develop the activities of the Business and Regional Support Unit and Warwick Ventures. The proposal focuses on the effective communication and marketing of the University?s range of services, facilities and expertise to regional business and business support organisations and the development and maintenance of information and management systems to provide support to business and community liaisons. The proposal will enable the University to further its strategic aims to enhance its contribution to the economic development and skills base of the West Midlands region.

The Medici consortium of Midlands universities (Aston, Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester and Warwick) has secured £2 million. Through a sequence of initiatives the partners are enhancing their reach-out, enterprise and commercialisation activities using both traditional business development activities and effective embedding within the research community itself. The proposal aims to create a college of Fellows, the "commercially aware academics of the future," together with the development of an international showcase that is beyond the capacity of any of the consortium members independently.

In addition, £3,552,000 was awarded to the Mercia Spinner Project, led by Warwick, to help spin out companies and £1,926,493 Science Enterprise Challenge funding was awarded to expand the work of the University's Mercia Institute of Enterprise.
