Fourteen keen and self-motivated fourth year undergraduate students from the Department of Engineering have set their sights on winning the 2004 Institution of Mechanical Engineers Formula Student competition, slated to take place in Leicestershire next year.

The international competition for engineering students offers the opportunity for a team to conceive, design, fabricate and finally compete with small formula-style racing cars, much in the same way as F1 racing. The cars are developed over the academic year and are taken to the annual competition for judging and comparison with a great number of other vehicles from colleges and universities throughout the world.

The Warwick Formula Student team, led by programme manager Ed Bower, has been working hard on designs for the new car, which they will enter in the competition.

According to Ed, "Designing and building a car while also trying to complete academic studies for a Masters degree is quite a challenge. There is pressure on our shoulders to improve on last year's performance, but everyone in our team is enthusiastic, dedicated and willing to make sacrifices to ensure success. We all have a passion for what we're doing and hopefully this will shine through at the competition in July."

However to successfully compete, the group needs to generate a great deal of sponsorship. They have therefore produced a sponsorship brochure and newsletter, which can be found on their promotional website at http://www.formulastudent.warwick.ac.uk

Sponsors already on board include Ford, Denso Corporation, IMI, SP Systems, Millers Oils, Warwick Control Technologies, Alcoa, UNIPART, National Instruments, Samco Sport, PS Team, ITG, Bridgeport, Visteon, Bryden Johnson & Co., Hitex Development Tools, Extra Lube ZX1, Atmel, Earl’s Performance Products and Ricardo.

Committed to success, motivated to achieve and geared to go the mission of the Warwick Formula Student team is clear…to win the 2004 IMechE Formula Student competition.
