£850,000 fund powers launch of Feuer International Scholarships in AI at University of Warwick

A half million pound donation by Warwick graduate, philanthropist and AI technology based entrepreneur Jonathan Feuer, matched with additional funding by the University of Warwick is powering the launch of the new Feuer International Scholarships in AI for MPHil or PhD research students in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Warwick.

jonathanThe Feuer International Scholarships in Artificial Intelligence will create a group of highly talented, academically brilliant, world-leading MPhil/PhD researchers who will go on to have careers as research leaders in the field of AI. Their challenge will be to explore the world’s toughest problems and deliver research that impacts both theoretical and applied solutions.

Based in Warwick’s new Mathematical Sciences building, the successful candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with Warwick’s Turing Fellows and work alongside the world’s sharpest minds in data science and artificial intelligence at the Alan Turing Institute in London. They will have access to industry partners and mentoring, with the potential to explore investment opportunities for their projects.

Professor Stephen Jarvis, Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor (Research), University of Warwick, and a member of the Programme Committee, Alan Turing Institute said:

"The Feuer International Scholarships in AI create an amazing opportunity for young people who want to excel in this field. The lucky recipients will have an incredible start to their career; generous funding, exciting research projects, the chance to engage with the Turing Institute, not to mention the prestige attached. We are very excited to launch the programme and are grateful to Jonathan for making it happen."

To attract the most outstanding students, the awards will be open to applicants from multiple disciplines, and will cover full fees (home or overseas), a generous stipend and a travel and equipment allowance. Students with aspiration as well as intellectual aptitude, who possess an innovative approach to problem solving, well developed technical skills, a willingness to work in a cross-disciplinary training and research setting should apply. For more information visit the funding pages or download the brochure.

The new scholarships will provide: full MPhil/PhD tuition fees for 3 years (home/EU or overseas); a stipend at RCUK rate plus a top up of £2,000 per annum; and support for travel, equipment and research. This makes the Scholarships worth up to more than £77,000 home student, and up to a figure over £132,000 for overseas student. Applications are now open for entry 2018/19 academic year and they close on 18th May 2018

Jonathan graduated from Warwick in 1983 with a B.Sc. Degree in Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics, and Economics (MORSE). Alongside his career in private equity he also co-founded Eigen Technologies, an AI company focussed on Natural Language Programming, where he is the Chairman. Jonathan is passionate about the opportunities artificial intelligence offers. With the Feuer International Scholarships in AI, Jonathan seeks to establish a prestigious cohort of multidisciplinary researchers with the ability to apply academic excellence and rigour to real world challenges. He said:

“My experience at Warwick offered a fantastic academic basis for my career since then. Now that I can give something back, I am delighted to fund this programme which I believe will help establish Warwick as a leading university in the field of Artificial Intelligence not just in the UK but also globally.”
