University of Warwick Students Celebrate World Refugee Day by Empowering and Supporting Refugees and Asylum Seekers
On World Refugee Day, the University of Warwick is proud to recognize the extraordinary efforts of its students who have selflessly dedicated their free time to assist and uplift refugees and asylum seekers residing in hotels in Coventry. Led by co-presidents Bel Govier and EloÏse Bui, Warwick STAR (Student Action for Refugees) has over 300 students who are committed to making a difference to the lives of those seeking refuge.
The student volunteers of Warwick STAR run two weekly English conversation clubs, providing vital support to refugees from countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, and Sudan. These clubs create a safe and nurturing environment where refugees can enhance their English language skills through engaging and interactive sessions. By promoting open dialogue and fostering meaningful connections, the students facilitate mutual understanding and friendship, breaking down barriers and building bridges of cultural exchange.
In addition to the conversation clubs, Warwick STAR organizes a youth club tailored specifically for young people aged 16 to 20. This club focuses on supporting young refugees with their GCSE studies, recognising the transformative power of education in empowering individuals and opening doors to a brighter future. Through mentorship and guidance, the student volunteers provide academic assistance and emotional support to these youngsters, helping them navigate the challenges they may encounter in their educational journeys.
EloÏse Bui, the other co-president, added, "Warwick STAR is more than a student society, I dare to say a community. All members share values of solidarity and inclusivity for refugees and asylum seekers and also for students. The international identity of our exec board is a proof to this inclusiveness! Our collective actions contribute to creating a welcoming environment in Coventry and at university.”
Pro Vice-Chancellor (International), Prof Mike Shipman said: "I am immensely proud of the students at the University of Warwick who have taken it upon themselves to use their free time to support refugees and asylum seekers in Coventry. Their dedication, empathy, and commitment to making a positive impact exemplify the values we hold dear at our institution.
“The University of Warwick stands behind these students wholeheartedly, and we will continue to provide our unwavering support as they work towards fostering a more inclusive and compassionate society."
