The University of Warwick ranks in the top three Russell Group universities across all question themes in 2023 National Student Survey

Results from this year’s National Student Survey (NSS) have been published by the Office for Students. The results found that 82% of Students at the University of Warwick said they would recommend their University to future students. The University of Warwick ranks in the top 3 in the Russell Group across all question groupings.

Students at the University of Warwick were more positive than the student sector average across six of the seven question groupings (Teaching on my Course, Learning Opportunities, Assessment and Feedback, Academic Support, Organisation and Management, Learning Resources and Student Voice), scoring just 1.42% below the sector average for Assessment and Feedback.

Students at the University of Warwick rated the Learning Resources they have access to 89.77% positively compared to the sector average of 86.22%. Students also put the University of Warwick nearly 5% ahead of the sector in both Academic Support (88.14%) and Student Voice (76.88%).

The NSS seeks the views of final-year undergraduate students across the UK every year. The survey enables higher education providers to continuously evaluate, improve and benchmark the courses they offer, and it helps to inform decisions made by prospective students about where to study.

There were significant changes to the NSS 2023, which means that it is not possible to do a comparative analysis of previous iterations of the survey. Read more about the changes and how the results are used to enhance our students’ experience.

Stuart Croft, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Warwick said: “As we approach the upcoming academic year, the feedback from our students is invaluable in shaping our path forward. Our graduating students, who began their journey amidst the challenges of the Covid pandemic, have shown remarkable resilience. The National Student Survey highlights the determination of our students and the consistent dedication of our staff to provide the best possible learning experience.”

The National Student Survey is one of the largest of its kind in the world with 339,000 responses across the UK this year. Today’s results show a 71.5% overall response rate from students on their experiences of higher education, up from 68.6 per cent in 2022. Students from the University of Warwick who were eligible to participate accounted for 3,755 of those responses, a 71.6% response rate. This was an increase of nearly 10% compared to 2022.

The University of Warwick ranks 8th in the UK according to the Guardian University Guide and 9th in the Times 2023 Good University Guide.

About the questions and positivity measure:
Questions were asked on a four-point positivity measure, with a fifth ‘This does not apply to me’ option. In new guidelines for the publications of results issued by OfS. In these, P 21 point 74 defines positivity as We propose replacing the agreement rate with a ‘positivity measure’. This would be created for all core questions, as well as for two new questions on freedom of expression and mental wellbeing provision. The positivity measure would be calculated as the proportion of respondents who answered the question using the first or second response option – that is, the more positive options. These options would vary by question. For example, for questions which measure degree, the positivity measure would be the proportion of respondents who answer ‘To a great extent’ or ‘To some extent’. For questions which measure frequency, the positivity measure would be the proportion of respondents who answer ‘Very often’ or ‘Fairly often’. Annex B details which response options would be regarded as positive.
