University of Warwick celebrates Holi with spectacular colour party

The University of Warwick campus celebrated the beginning of spring this week with a Holi Colour Party.

Over 400 students celebrated in the traditional way by throwing brightly coloured powder at each other.

Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates spring, love, and new life. Across the world it will be celebrated on the 25th March but Warwick students wanted to celebrate early so more people could enjoy the event, as the official date falls during the student holiday period. The event was supported by the Warwick Presents team, staff volunteers and Welcome Service Ambassadors.

Will Thomas, Head of Student Community Experience said: “We were delighted with the event, with the students enjoying some unseasonably sunny weather to turn our green campus literally any other colour you can think of.

“Our work is about creating colourful, vibrant and meaningful experiences that celebrate our diverse student community, help them make connections with each other and feel like they belong, and I can think of no event that epitomises that better than Holi.”

In addition to the lively colours, the event featured an array of traditional foods and drinks allowing attendees to savour the authentic flavours of Holi. These included:

  • Gathia: Savoury snacks with a blend of traditional herbs and spices.

  • Jalebi: Deep-fried snacks soaked in sugar syrup.

  • Thandai: Cold milk with nuts, saffron, rose water, fennel seeds, cardamom, and peppercorns.

  • Masala chai: Brewed black tea with aromatic herbs and spices.
