Warwick astrophysicist awarded George Darwin Lectureship by the Royal Astronomical Society

Astrophysicist Dimitri Veras of The University of Warwick has been awarded the prestigious George Darwin Lectureship by the Royal Astronomical Society.

The George Darwin Lecture is an annual event delivered by a distinguished speaker on a relevant topic in astronomy. Named after Sir George Darwin, an esteemed astronomer and son of Charles Darwin, the lecture celebrates excellence in the field.

In the citation for the lectureship, the Royal Astronomical Society records that, “Dr Dimitri Veras is an outstanding theoretical astrophysicist, and a leader in the field of post-main-sequence planetary system science”.

The citation goes on to note that, “His work has enabled observations to be used to learn about the nature, composition and ultimate fate of planetary systems. He is an engaging science communicator and an inspirational speaker to audiences of all kinds, and a superb ambassador for exoplanet science and stellar astrophysics.”

Dr Veras said, “I am truly honoured to be recognised by the Society in this way, and I thank my colleagues who have also helped to drive forward this exciting field of research.”

Congratulating this year’s award winners, the Royal Astronomical Society President, and former Gold Medal winner, Professor Mike Lockwood, said: “Awards are a very important part of the Society’s function. All our award winners are an inspiration, and it is clear to me that the depth of talent means that the future of our sciences is incredibly bright.”
