From Blank Wall to Bright Legacy: Street Artist David Speed to Create 60th Anniversary Legacy Project for The University of Warwick Campus

The University of Warwick is celebrating its 60th anniversary in style with a bold, neon-infused legacy project created in partnership with artist David Speed.

The Retreat to CreateLink opens in a new window project will see David immerse himself in campus life, meeting students, staff, and the local community. Alongside creating a striking large-scale mural, he’ll share his expertise through interactive masterclasses, a keynote speech in the award-winning Faculty of Arts building (FAB), and a visit to a local school. He’ll even record an episode of his #1 podcast, Creative Rebels, on site with special guests from the creative community. Bookings are open nowLink opens in a new window.

David Speed is famous for creating art installations in bold, fluorescent colours and has painted murals across the globe. Currently one of the most recognised creators in the UK’s contemporary art scene, he has been commissioned to create pieces for MTV, Nobu, Fortnum & Mason, and Shaquille O’Neal.

David is no stranger to Coventry; he previously painted the inspiring ‘Hope’ mural on Tower Street as part of Coventry’s In Paint We Trust project during the 2021 City of Culture celebrations. His work is already woven into the artistic fabric of the region, and this project is about elevating that connection.

“I’m looking forward to returning to Coventry for my Retreat to Create residency. I see this project as a true collaboration, not only with The University of Warwick, but with the wider community. My work, at the core, is about light and I’ve learned that you find light by exploring new paths and collaborating with many different kinds of people.” said David Speed.

“This is an opportunity to share what I’ve learned throughout my career and to combine my art with one of my greatest passions: inspiring people to unlock their creativity and transform their lives.”

After soaking up inspiration on campus, David will develop two mural concepts, with students and staff voting on the final design. The winning piece will transform a campus space with David’s signature neon aesthetic, unveiled in late May.

Professor Rachel Moseley, Vice-Provost of The Faculty of Arts, said: “Warwick’s 60th anniversary is not just a reflection on our past, but a bold step into the future—one that champions creativity, culture, and collaboration at its core.

“Through this partnership with David Speed, we are bringing our Cultural StrategyLink opens in a new window to life, transforming a blank wall into a bright legacy that embodies our commitment to artistic expression and community engagement. This mural will be a lasting testament to Warwick’s spirit of innovation and imagination, inspiring generations to come."

Retreat to Create is led by the Marketing, Communications and Insight team at Warwick and is part of wider 60th anniversaryLink opens in a new window celebrations, culminating in a spectacular international light procession winding through the heart of campus in November.

This year, The University of Warwick is celebrating 60 years of innovation, collaboration and transformational spirit, and everyone is invited to be part of it. Through events, art, and shared experiences, Warwick is highlighting its rich history and vibrant global network of students, staff, alumni, local community and partners.
