The Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) is a new way of measuring the impact universities have on businesses, their community and the wider world.

KEF is conducted by Research England (UKRI) for the Government, and it sits alongside the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and the Research Excellence Framework (REF), which all taken together help provide a fuller picture of how universities are performing and what impact they’re having.

The KEF results published today, Wednesday 31st March 2021, place Warwick in the:

• Top 10% for “Public and community engagement”

• Top 20% for “Working with business”

• Top 30% for “Working with the public and third sector”

KEF examined universities in number of different “Clusters”. Warwick was placed in Cluster V which is described by UKRI as: “Very large, very high research intensive and broad-discipline universities undertaking significant amounts of excellent research”. Alongside Warwick in that group are sixteen more of England’s leading universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, King’s, Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham, Sheffield, Southampton, London Business School, Queen Mary, Bristol, and Leeds. Warwick was ranked as performing 20% above that leading universities group’s average for the University’s support for our region’s “Local growth and regeneration”

Warwick’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Stuart Croft said:

“This first set of figures are just the beginning of a journey for England’s universities in enhancing all that we do in these areas. We have strong ambitions and exciting plans for building from this platform moving forward at Warwick. However, I am particularly pleased to see that we have one of the best performances among leading universities for Warwick’s support for our region’s ‘Local growth and regeneration’ “

“Warwick’s overall economic impact in the West Midlands equates to almost £1 billion per year. We continue to work closely with our city, county and region. Not just as a major employer but as a significant partner.”

“Partnerships, of course, will be the key ingredient – with our Local Authorities, LEPs, and the WMCA but also with the NHS, local and community groups, schools and colleges. We are committed to supporting the economic, social and cultural recovery of our region, particularly after this challenging year for us all.”
