Two Senior Academics Honoured at University of Warwick Degree Ceremonies

Two senior figures from the world of higher education are to be honoured at the University of Warwick's winter degree ceremonies on Friday 14th of January 2000. Michael Shattock, former Registrar of the University of Warwick will receive an honorary Doctorate of Laws (LLD), and Dr Ken Edwards, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, will receive an honorary Doctorate of Science (Hon DSc).

In 1987 Michael Shattock  led the team established by the University Grants Committee which rescued University College Cardiff from Bankruptcy; in 1994 he chaired a public enquiry into the affairs of Derby College, Wilmorton which led to the dismissal of the governing body; in 1996 he prepared a plan for the governance and management of the European University Institute in Florence. He has also been an advisor to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education.

Dr Edwards was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester from 1987 until his retirement in September 1999. Just before that retirement he was able to welcome the success of the joint bid between the University of Warwick and the University of Leicester to establish the Leicester-Warwick Medical School. He began his academic career at Cambridge University starting in 1966 as a Lecturer in the Department of Genetics. In 1971 he was elected to a Fellowship at St John's College, Cambridge and served as Secretary to the College Council from 1975-77. In 1981 he became Head of the Genetics Department of Cambridge until 1984. From 1982 he was also Chairman of the Council of the School of Biological Sciences. In 1984 he was appointed to the post of Secretary General of the Faculties, one of the three principal administrative offices of the University of Cambridge. He also served as Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals (CVCP) from 1993-95.
