Pioneering study into the support needs of Arabic families of children with autism living in the UK launched

puxxleResearchers from the University of Warwick’s Centre for Educational Development, Appraisal and Research (CEDAR) have begun a pioneering study into the support needs of Arabic families of children with autism living in the UK, and are appealing for parent caregivers to share their experiences in a short survey.

The research will improve understanding of the particular needs of families from Arabic backgrounds, and help schools, health professionals and charities to provide effective, culturally appropriate support to Arabic families and children with autism spectrum disorder.

Barah Alallawi from CEDAR is leading the study. She explains: “All families need accurate information about how they can support their child, but different ethnic and cultural groups can vary in their beliefs about how best to support family members with disabilities, and the role of outside professionals.

“From our recent research, it is already clear that there is a gap in our understanding of the needs of Arabic families of children with autism living in non-Arabic countries. My study will close that gap and help shape how these families are supported in future in the UK.”

Mrs Alallawi is keen to hear from primary caregivers, who identify themselves as from an Arabic background, of children aged between 4 and 15 years 11 months and formally diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, living in the UK. Primary caregivers are usually, but not always, the mother. Mothers may be biological, adoptive or foster carers.

Volunteers will be asked to fill in a short survey, available in Arabic and English, which will ask about their family and their experiences of supporting a child with autism spectrum disorder. All responses will be anonymised. The survey can be completed online or via the post.

Families interested in participating can find more information online at: https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/cedar/surveysupportarabic/

The survey is open until June 2018.
