University of Warwick £20M teaching and learning hub reaches milestone

Teaching and learningA multi-million pound project to deliver a brand new teaching and learning hub at the University of Warwick was unveiled to student ambassadors yesterday (4 May) at the official topping out ceremony.

The £20m Teaching and Learning Building is a purpose built, ‘building for all’ on campus which provides a shared space where all university departments can come together to teach and to learn. The building is equipped with the latest technology to assist with teaching and has outstanding multi-purpose social learning spaces.

The building is the first stage in a comprehensive redevelopment of the central part of the university’s campus. Vice Chancellor Stuart Croft and a number of student ambassadors attended the ceremony, where the milestone was marked by the trowelling of a lecture theatre step.

Stuart Croft, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Warwick said,

‘It’s inspiring to see the building take shape and progress seems to be made on a daily basis. The opportunities this new building brings for our students are fantastic. It’s a purpose built building for all on campus.

Architecturally it’s outstanding, with cutting edge facilities to help with teaching, learning, academic study and our huge range of societies. I hope it will make a big difference to students, helping to emphasise the importance of teaching, along with research, at Warwick.’

The front is made up of a 3 storey glass façade opening into a spacious atrium with an impressive curved roof structure which spans across the lecture theatres from the wings.

The centre of the building contains 500 and 250 seat lecture theatres together with a suite of seminar rooms. Seminar rooms can open into the lobby / atrium to maximise space and study areas can also open onto outdoor areas. There are two wings with a curved interconnecting roof covering the lecture theatres which are set within the centre of the building.

The modern design provides access in, out and through the building in many directions, integrating the building into the heart of the University campus.

Isaac Leigh, President of the Students Union said,

‘This new building is a brilliant development for students. There is a really impressive variety of spaces – from 500-strong lecture theatres to much-needed extra seminar rooms – and it’s a modern and exciting design. It’s great news for Warwick students of today and tomorrow.’

The building was described today as a building for all on campus and I can’t wait to see how societies and other student groups use the space, in particular the flexible rooms where the space extends out onto the outdoor areas.’

Construction of the new building is due to finish in the new academic year, located on University road, within the University’s Central Campus near Coventry.
