“You are not alone”: The University of Warwick hosts day of commemoration and support for Ukraine
On Saturday 8 March 2025, The University of Warwick hosted Three Years of War in Ukraine: A Day of Commemoration and Support, an event dedicated to reflecting on the impact of the war and strengthening support for Ukraine.
Organised by the Ukrainian Medical Charity, the event brought together charities, volunteers, students, and local organisations to share experiences and explore collaborative efforts.

Marking three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion, the event featured a series of talks and panel discussions with experts and individuals actively involved in humanitarian, medical, and educational support for Ukraine. Speakers addressed key challenges facing those providing aid on the ground, as well as the importance of preserving Ukrainian culture and identity during wartime.
Dr Oksana Trushkevych, Assistant Professor at The University of Warwick and member of the Organisation of Ukrainian Women (OUZH), said: “As a Warwick academic, I was impressed by the nuanced talk by our scholar, Professor Christoph Mick, on Ukrainian history.

“As a member of OUZH, I was proud of the work we did and grateful for the opportunity to share it. And as a Ukrainian, I was humbled by the commitment, bravery, and humility of volunteers and activists. Everything about this event was a statement: ‘You are not alone.’ And this makes a huge difference and helps us cope.”
The University of Warwick has been actively engaged in supporting Ukraine, including its twinning agreement with Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics (NURE) since 2022. This partnership, part of a wider UK initiative to assist Ukrainian universities, has provided academic collaboration, resource sharing, and solidarity in the face of ongoing conflict. The university has also developed strong links with the Ukrainian Catholic University, with Warwick academic Professor Christoph Mick hosting two summer schools and set to host another this year.
Workshops and networking opportunities throughout the day encouraged knowledge-sharing and new partnerships, reinforcing the need for sustained international support. Attendees had the opportunity to connect with organisations working directly in Ukraine and discuss how they could contribute to ongoing efforts.
The event also served as a platform to highlight the resilience of the Ukrainian people and the vital role of global solidarity. Through initiatives like these, the University of Warwick continues to support Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty and recovery, standing in solidarity with those affected by the war.
