University of Warwick powers quantum innovations in healthcare

A groundbreaking quantum research hub, in partnership with The University of Warwick, has been launched to revolutionise healthcare through quantum-enabled technologies.

The UK Quantum Biomedical Sensing Research Hub (Q-BIOMED) officially launched at The Shard in London, marking a pivotal step in applying quantum sensing to early disease diagnosis and treatment.

Supported by £24 million in funding as part of the UK’s National Quantum Technologies Programme, Q-BIOMED is the first hub of its kind to focus on healthcare and life sciences. This collaborative initiative brings together six leading universities, including Warwick, UCL, Cambridge, Oxford, Heriot-Watt, and Cardiff, alongside partners from industry, clinical institutions, charities, and patient groups.

Professor Mark Newton, Head of Physics, University of Warwick, said: “The Q-BIOMED hub brings together physicists, chemists and engineers with clinicians, medics and government to develop and importantly deliver quantum-enabled technologies that will enable earlier diagnoses and treatment strategies. Along with the other members of the Warwick Q-BIOMED team, Dr Ben Green, Prof Julie Macpherson and Prof Gavin Morley, I am extremely excited to be involved in this transformational project.”

The hub’s core mission is to develop cutting-edge quantum sensors capable of detecting cells and molecules with unparalleled sensitivity. This technology has the potential to transform healthcare through innovations in:

  • Biomedical Imaging: Enhanced detection of neurological, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative conditions.

  • In-Vitro Diagnostics: Ultra-sensitive, accessible blood tests for early diagnosis of diseases like infections and cancer.

  • Cancer Treatment: Advanced techniques using magnetic nanoparticles for targeting early-stage and hard-to-treat cancers.

  • Single-Cell Analysis: Quantum-enabled insights into cellular mechanisms to advance disease prevention strategies.


Using these advancements, the hub aims to build a foundation for a quantum-health innovation ecosystem in the UK.

The launch of the Q-BIOMED hub, held at the Shard, showcased research from six partner universities, highlighting the transformative potential of quantum technologies, which leverage quantum physics to achieve breakthroughs beyond the capabilities of classical physics.

Warwick’s expertise was central to the occasion, with significant contributions to imaging, sensing and diagnostic innovation, supported by Warwick Business School, which hosted the launch.

Professor Dame Angela McLean, the Government Chief Scientific Adviser, delivered a keynote address, stating: “Quantum technology is at the heart of the Government's ambition to be a leading innovative economy. The new Q-BIOMED hub is a great step towards improving our health care using quantum technology and enables cross-sector collaboration.”

The day concluded with a policy session that reinforced the hub’s vision to position the UK as a global leader in quantum health innovation, underscoring Warwick’s leadership in this field.
