University of Warwick recognised for commitment to race equality

The University of Warwick has achieved the Race Equality Charter Bronze award, recognising its commitment to working towards race equality.
The national charter mark, awarded by Advance HE, marks an institutional determination to tackle race inequality at all levels.
Warwick will continue fulfilling the goals set in its Race Equality Action Plan, with its success measured through an independent process over five years.
Commenting on achieving the bronze award, Kulbir Shergill, Director of Social Inclusion at the University of Warwick, said:
“We’re proud to have achieved this important kite mark, which was gained as a result of the hard work of many Warwick people and recognises that we are moving forward with our race equality work.
“The work that we have done so far, such as increasing the proportion of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff in academic and administrative positions since 2017, has helped us focus our resources on critical issues that will help us to move the dial. We acknowledge the feedback from Advance HE and will incorporate that into our next steps. This Race Equality Charter Bronze award really is just the beginning. We continue to work together to make Warwick a place where all students and staff feel valued, safe and supported to achieve their full potential, where racial diversity and inclusion are the norm, and where racism of any kind is stamped out.”
Dr Arun Verma, Head of REC at Advance HE, said, “Achieving REC Bronze is recognition of an institution’s robust foundation for eliminating racial inequalities, developing inclusive cultures and moving from commitment to sustainable and integrated bold and ambitious action.
“Advance HE looks forward to supporting the University of Warwick as it progresses its action plan to advance race equality.”
The Race Equality Charter aims to improve the representation, experience, progression and success of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students within higher education. It provides a framework through which institutions work to reflect and act on institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of the progression and success of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students.
There are currently 96 institutional REC members and Warwick is one of 22 to achieve REC Bronze award status. Bronze award status lasts for five years.
