University of Warwick Recognises Outstanding Contributions with Honorary Degrees

The University of Warwick has announced the recipients of its honorary degrees for the Winter 2025 graduation ceremonies.

These distinguished individuals have made significant contributions to their respective fields and communities and will be honoured for their exceptional achievements during graduation ceremonies in January.

Clive Stannard, BA, Hon DLitt


Clive Stannard has had a distinguished career, contributing significantly to global food security and interdisciplinary scholarship. At the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation, he specialised in plant genetic resources, playing a vital role in safeguarding biodiversity and addressing climate change. His work included stocking seeds in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault and serving as Interim Secretary for the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources, crucial for food security, refugee matters, and sustainability.


Alongside his UN career, Clive pursued numismatics, transforming our understanding of the economy of Republican Rome. His research on non-state coinages, especially in Italy between the second and first centuries BC, has been groundbreaking, leading to numerous publications and academic fellowships. His ability to bridge modern and historical economic systems exemplifies the University’s commitment to cross-disciplinary research and education.



Anthony Kelly, Hon DSc


Anthony Kelly, a retired probation officer, has dedicated himself to improving health outcomes in Caribbean and Black African communities, particularly focusing on type 2 diabetes. Drawing from his own 20-year journey with the condition and his Jamaican heritage, he has become a trusted patient expert and advocate. Anthony educates on prevention and management through healthy lifestyle changes, leading over 140 community engagements annually across Britain, the Caribbean, and Canada. His work includes workshops, media appearances, and contributions to research projects.

He has held key roles, including Diabetes UK Community Champion and Strategic Patient Partner in the National Diabetes Prevention Programme. Anthony has also contributed to health equality initiatives, such as the West Midlands Clinical Research Network and the Birmingham-Lewisham Health Inequalities Review. His empathetic approach and teaching background make him an effective communicator, resonating deeply with his audiences.

Tony is a recipient of numerous accolades, including the British Citizen Award for Health (2021) and the Black Honours Award (2022), Tony’s contributions to health education and advocacy are transformative.
