Warwick Engineer wins Women’s Engineering Society Prize
Dr Claire Lucas, from the School of Engineering has won the Women’s Engineering Society Prize at the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award 2019 at the event last night, the 5th December 2019 at the Savoy in London.
Dr Claire Lucas an Associate Professor of System and Information Engineering at the University of Warwick won the award for her passion in developing a curriculum that attracts female students to engineering.
In fact, since she joined Warwick in 2015, 40% of the cohort have been female students studying a mixture of mechanical, electronics and software engineering together with data science.
Claire’s own journey into engineering began when she went to an open day at the University of Oxford to look at the law course, however she found herself stumbling upon the Engineering department where she was drawn in by a talk about the types of engineering she could learn.
Since doing an undergrad and PhD at Oxford, Claire worked as a Mathematical Modelling Specialist at Jaguar Land Rover, before using her experience in the engineering world to encourage more young females to take it up at Warwick.
Upon winning the runner-up award Dr Claire Lucas from the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick comments:
“Changing the diversity in the engineering industry and in education is something I am so passionate about, and it is such an honour to have this recognised by winning this award.
“I hope to continue to encourage more women into engineering, and hope that in the future mothers like myself can be role models for their children to be scientists and engineers.”
The Institute of Engineering and Technology explain why Claire won the award:
“Claire is an excellent role model that has a considerable amount of experience promoting STEM across the UK.
“She’s a strong communicator and has the ability to promote her skill and talent to explain highly technical subjects very clearly.”
