Dr Jain has been researching the history of mental health services in India, from the colonial to the contemporary period, using archives in India and the UK, as well as case notes from hospitals in Bangalore and elsewhere in India. Helped by a grant from the Wellcome Trust, he has archived more than 6,000 case notes from the 19-20th centuries. In addition to various articles, he has also published two books - an institutional history of NIMHANS, and a edited a volume of essays on the Partition of India. This work has helped understand the interface between science and medicine, and social responses to mental illness in India.
