Phillips worked in and around the Midlands for a number of years in the 1970s. He has been called one of the leading landscape painters of the Midlands. This work, the only pastel in the University's Collection, evokes the atmosphere of the North East coastline. The expansive beaches and changing skies are captured by the strong marks and his use of atmospheric colours.
