Vigil by Murray Robertson

Vigil by Murray Robertson

Golder-Thompson gift.

The theme of mankind’s increasingly troubled relationship with the natural world often reflected in Robertson’s work. In this woodcut he depicts an oppressive industrial landscape with smoking factory chimneys; in the centre is a man, apparently restrained at the ankle by a chain, standing by a leafless tree and holding a snake, (perhaps a symbol of other life in the world). The title ‘Vigil’ suggests someone seeking to call public attention to, or protest about, a threat or situation.
