Rebranding Artificial Intelligence as Additional Intelligence
Colleagues from our Digital Learning team attended this year’s Digifest, an exhibition hosted by Jisc in Birmingham. The event welcomed over 2,000 delegates in person and online and gave attendees an opportunity to network and explore how technology, pedagogy, and policy can be harnessed to overcome today's challenges in digital learning.
Paul Ottey, Faculty Digital Learning Consultant for Science, Engineering and Medicine found the opening keynote speech of Professor Paul Iske, ‘Brilliant failures: working together, failing together, learning together’ particularly insightful.
Paul explained that the perspective of Professor Iske of Maastricht University’s School of Business and Economics encouraged a different view of Artificial Intelligence, saying, “Professor Iske highlighted that in any project, failures are not only inevitable but also essential learning opportunities. He encouraged a culture that accepts, shares and learns from failure and he emphasised the potential of AI to assist people in their roles and tasks instead of replacing them.
His perspective on AI aligns with this philosophy of embracing complexity and learning from unexpected outcomes. By shifting the understanding of Artificial Intelligence to Additional Intelligence, he emphasises the potential of AI to complement and enhance human decision making and creativity, moving AI tools from being the ‘hero’ of the story to part of an integrated innovation and creation process.”
With sixty sessions over the two-day event, members of our Digital Learning team gathered valuable information on the latest developments and resources in online teaching and learning tools. To keep up to date with our work, sign up to receive our newsletter here.
