Watch Back: Cultural Transformation in Digital Assessment at Warwick

Natasha Nakariakova and Yihua Huang from our Faculty Support Team recently presented at the Association for Learning TechnologyLink opens in a new window (ALT) webinar, sharing the University’s innovative approach to digital assessment.

Their session, “Beyond Tools and Training: Cultural Transformation in Digital Assessment at the University of Warwick,” explored how Warwick is moving beyond one-off technical training to embed confidence and digital literacy across departments. This approach uses a distributed model that empowers local academic, administrative, and technical teams, creating a networked culture of practice while balancing central policy with departmental flexibility.

The presentation featured two case studies that bring this model to life:

  • Economics Department: Administrative staff were mentored and supported to lead first-line support during high-stakes online exams for over 500 students, reducing pressure on central services.
  • School of Engineering: Doctoral researchers were trained in technical and pedagogical skills to develop high-quality question banks, becoming co-designers who bridge academic vision with digital delivery.

Natasha and Yihua also shared Warwick’s emerging framework for digital assessment capability, key metrics for evaluating readiness and sustainability, and lessons for enabling staff to own digital assessment practice through distributed expertise, peer learning, and cultural change.
