Developing AI-Enhanced Reading Comprehension in Language Learning

Background

This initiative focused on enhancing reading comprehension for advanced language learners by leveraging AI tools to create curriculum-aligned resources. Initially aimed at training students to use AI, the project evolved into developing bespoke materials tailored to the format and demands of an open-book, online reading comprehension test.

Challenge

We faced several challenges, including:

  • Adapting to a newly discovered test format that required a shift from tool training to resource creation.
  • Ensuring that AI-generated materials matched the curriculum in terms of topic relevance, vocabulary scope, and text complexity.
  • Designing resources that were pedagogically sound and accessible to students with varying levels of AI familiarity.

Solution

We collaborated with the subject leader to deliver a comprehensive solution. Key actions included:

  • Identifying the learning need and aligning content with curriculum requirements.
  • Using AI tools (e.g., Copilot, ChatGPT) to generate advanced-level reading texts.
  • Engaging subject leaders to review and refine AI-generated content for accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Creating immersive video readings with synced text and audio, enhanced with English subtitles and edited using tools like CapCut.
  • Developing strategy guidance to help students identify main ideas, key points, and apply comprehension techniques.
  • Packaging all materials - texts, videos, guidance, and language support into a cohesive resource distributed via the VLE (e.g., Moodle) and in-class delivery.

Testimonial of Professor Zhiyan Guo

“During a classroom demonstration, students found the video content particularly useful as a revision tool, helping them consolidate their understanding ahead of assessments. Through collaboration with Yihua and Natasha, we have developed the skills to independently create tailored materials using AI tools - saving significant time in preparing documents and enhancing the flexibility of teaching.”

Innovation

This project demonstrates a novel application of generative AI in language education. By shifting from AI tool training to AI-assisted content creation, we have introduced a sustainable model for resource development that empowers educators. The integration of immersive video readings and AI-curated texts represents a forward-thinking approach to digital pedagogy. The resource’s acceptance into the AI Toolkit for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences further highlights its cross-disciplinary relevance and innovative value.

Conclusion

This collaborative project successfully delivered a targeted, AI-enhanced resource that supports students in preparing for their reading comprehension test. It reduces reliance on independent AI use, saves time, and ensures alignment with curriculum goals.

The resource is subject to annual review and ongoing development in partnership with the subject leader and the Digital Learning team.
