Feedback Fruits
The University is currently running a proof of concept for the Feedback Fruits Automated Feedback system for a small number of departments.
In this guide:
What is Feedback Fruits
FeedbackFruits is a tool integrated into Moodle that gives you interactive feedback and assessment support. You can submit work, provide feedback to peers, receive instructor feedback, and self-assess your writing skills. We are currently trialling the 'automated feedback' part of this, focusing on writing skills.
How does it work?
The Automated Feedback activity allows you to upload pieces of your written work prior to submitting the work for full assessment.
The Feedback Fruits then runs your submitted work through a curated AI that identifies areas where you could improve your writing in areas such as grammar, academic writing and referencing.
You will then be returned an annotated version of your work with suggestions for ways that you could improve it.
Some important things to remember
- Only some departments are using Automated Feedback currently. How Automated Feedback is used will depend on your department and specific modules. Some may link it to your assessed work, some may ask you to write a piece of work specifically for the Automated Feedback activity.
- The Automated Feedback activity willnotassess your work. You will not receive a mark for your work and the Automated Feedback results will not impact your degree mark.
- Your tutors will be able to see your submitted work and the Automated Feedback to allow them to identify areas where the module group may need more support but they will not be marking these results.
- Automated feedback will not correct your work for you. It will make suggestions but it will be up to you to implement them in your work.
Submitting a file
You can access the Automated Feedback activity through the module's Moodle page. Your tutor will have included instructions as part of the assignment. Read these carefully before submitting.
You can either "drag and drop" your document from your desktop or file folder, click on the "Select Document Button" and choose your file or use a URL if your document is stored online. If you upload the wrong document you can remove it by clicking on the delete button.
Reviewing your feedback
Once you submit a file successfully, your feedback will be automatically generated by Feedback Fruits and will be ready to view (this may take a few minutes to load). Click the "View Feedback" button to view your feedback.
Once your document and feedback have loaded you can see an overview of the feedback criteria on the right hand side of the screen. On the left side of the screen you will see the text of your document with any suggestions that the AI has made highlighted.
You can look at particular suggestions by clicking on the highlighted text. You will then see details of the suggestion on the right hand side of the screen. You can rate how useful the suggestion is or if you think that the AI is incorrect then you can note this by clicking on the button.
Remember, the AI is not infallible and may get things wrong.
If you think that the AI's suggestions are correct you should now change you document. Important, you need to do this yourself in your own document. The AI will not do this for you.
The AI feedback is designed to help you develop your skills, if you agree with the suggestions you should now take some time to implement these on your own work and reflect on your writing process in preparation for your next assessment.
